Anyone who can drive can teach you, so why take professional driving lessons?
Simple–driving lessons are not just about getting a driving license; they are designed to teach you how to handle a car in almost every situation imaginable. Without the expertise, correct guidance, and knowledge it can be difficult (and dangerous to say the least!)
Our advice: Learn to drive properly by taking professional driving lessons in either manual or automatic cars from only a qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or Potential Driving Instructor (PDI). It’s illegal for someone to charge for driving lessons if they’re not an ADI or a PDI – you can report them to the DVSA.
If you are intending on taking lessons from someone other than an instructor (without paying them) ensure:
- They are over 21 years of age.
- They are qualified to drive the type of vehicle you want to learn in. For example, they must have a manual car license if they’re supervising you in a manual car.
- They have had their full driving license for 3 years minimum.

We aim to build up the student’s confidence in many different driving situations and pass on all the knowledge they’ll need for the road in the future.
We provide our learners with the right conditions to receive sound training in all the categories that DSA’s driving test expects.
To ensure our learners are fully confident in all aspects of driving, we teach them:
- How to drive in a multi-story car park, drive into a parking bay and then reverse.
- Teach them how to confidently park between two cars on a side road.
- Drive with the radio on (optional and only when at test standard).
- We’ll also teach them how to refuel a car by getting them to do it.
- Drive into an automatic car wash.
- Follow a satellite navigation system (GPS).
- Drive independently back home without instruction (only when at test standard).
- Learners will be asked what certain road signs mean whilst on the move.
How many lessons?
On average, it can take between 15 to 20 hourly lessons to reach the test standard for a novice.
However, this can vary depending on individual differences. The most important thing is to take the time you need so that you feel confident and that you have the right skills to be safe behind the wheel. This inevitably means that the more lessons you have, the better prepared for the road you’ll be!
