About Driving Lessons

Anyone who can drive can teach you to drive, so why take professional driving lessons?

Simple–driving lessons are not just about getting a driving licence; they are designed to teach you how to handle a car in almost every situation imaginable. Without the expertise, guidance, and knowledge, it can be tricky (and dangerous, to say the least!).

We advise taking lessons only from a qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) or a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI). It’s illegal for someone to charge for driving lessons if they’re not an ADI or PDI—you can report them to the DVSA.

If you intend on taking lessons from someone other than an instructor (without paying them), ensure:

  • They are over 21 years of age.
  • They are qualified to drive the vehicle you want to learn in. For example, they must have a manual car licence if they’re supervising you in a manual car.
  • They have held their full driving licence for at least 3 years.

Streetwise Driving School has been helping new drivers pass their tests in manual and automatic cars for over 25 years by being patient and drawing on its expert knowledge. We prepare our pupils to the highest standard, giving them the best possible chance of passing their test the first time.

We aim to build students’ confidence in a range of driving situations and equip them with all the knowledge they’ll need for the road ahead.

We provide our learners with the right conditions for practical training across all the categories required by the DVSA driving test.

To ensure our learners are fully confident in all aspects of driving, we teach them:

  • How do you drive in a multi-storey car park, into a parking bay, and then reverse?
  • Teach them how to park between two cars on a side road confidently.
  • Drive with the radio on (optional and only when at the test standard).
  • We’ll also teach them how to refuel a car by getting them to do it.
  • Drive into an automatic car wash.
  • Follow a satellite navigation system (GPS).
  • Drive independently back home without instruction (only when at test standard).
  • Learners will be asked what certain road signs mean whilst on the move.

How many driving lessons do i need?

On average, it can take 15 to 20 hours of lessons to reach the test standard for a novice.

However, this can vary depending on individual differences. The most important thing is to take the time to feel confident and have the right skills to be safe behind the wheel. This inevitably means that the more lessons you have, the better prepared you’ll be for the road!

Good luck, and most of all, enjoy the lessons. Please read our reviews to learn about our customers’ experiences!

Mock Driving Tests – Recommended for All Pupils

For pupils not currently learning with Streetwise, we recommend booking a Mock Driving Test (manual or automatic) through our sister driving school.

A Mock Driving Test is a practice test conducted and marked like an official examiner would perform an actual driving test.

It is an invaluable exercise that every pupil should experience before taking their official driving test, and it offers an unbiased, third-party opinion.

Pupils who do not have a mock test are more likely to fail due to the unknown experience and structure of the test, but those who do stand a greater chance.
